Violinist plays during his own brain surgery.
When Roger Frisch noticed hand tremors back in
2009, it was no small deal -- as a professional
violinist, steady hands are absolutely imperative
to his work. With shaking hands, Frisch -- who
had been a professional musician for 40 years --
could no longer draw the bow smoothly across
the strings of his instrument. He was diagnosed
with nervous disorder essential tremor .
The solution? Deep brain stimulation, to be
administered by brain surgeons at the Mayo Clinic
Neural Engineering Lab. This procedure involves
the implantation of what is known as a brain
pacemaker, which sends electrical impulses to
specific parts of the brain -- it is used to treat
such conditions as Parkinson's disease, major
depression, Tourette syndrome, tremors, and
chronic pain.
Although Frisch's tremors might be considered
relatively minor, for a concert violinist they would
have spelled the end of his career.
In order to find the brain region that was causing
the tremors, the surgeons had to insert electrodes
into his brain, stimulating various points. But,
because the tremor was so mild, the surgeons
would not have been able to tell if they were
hitting the optimum spot -- unless, that is, Frisch
was awake and helping.
It's actually par for the course for patients to be
conscious during brain surgery so that doctors
can monitor their condition, but Frisch's case
required something new: for him to be playing the
violin. The surgical team fitted bow with a three-
axis accelerometer, which allowed the team to
monitor Frisch's movements in real-time. When
they inserted the electrodes into his brain, they
were able to gauge whether or not the stimulation
was affecting the tremors.
The surgery was effective -- Frisch was once
again playing with the Minnesota Orchestra just
three weeks later. He can turn the pacemaker on
using a controller, allowing him to play just as
smoothly as he could before the tremors. The
video below was uploaded by the Mayo Clinic in
April of this year.

Nigeria's oldest clergyman pastor Sadela dies at 113. He is survived by 37 year old wife.
NIGERIA'S oldest Christian evangelist Pastor
Samuel Sadela the founder and president of the
Gospel Apostolic Church has died in Lagos just a
week short of his 114th birthday.
Pastor Sadela, who was due to celebrate his
birthday on August 31, passed away in the
premises of the church in Lagos. A condolence
register has been opened in the church premises
in the Gbagada district of Lagos.
He reportedly died few hours before
commencement of a special revival programme
that would have culminated in the celebration of
his 114th birthday on Sunday, August 31. His
pastoral calling started in 1928 when he visited the
famous Prophet Moses Orimolade of the Cherubim
and Seraphim Church.
When Pastor Sadela marked his 113th last year
birthday, he expressed the hope that he would live
up to 200 years of age. Ever controversial, Pastor
Sadela, who claimed angels taught him to read the
Holy Bible when he was only two years of age,
raised few eyebrows when he married a 30-year-
old woman in 2007.
At his birthday celebrations last year, Pastor
Sadela said: “I feel happy to be this old. Actually, I
feel like a young man and I still enjoy my meal of
pounded yam, eba and bush meat.
"I sleep whenever I want to and wake up stronger,
so I want to live longer to prove to all that God
remains the same as He was in times past. If
Methuselah could live for 969 years, God can make
me live well beyond 113 and if Noah could be 950,
it is not too much for Him to make me live up to
200.”
Pastor Sadela first got married in 1934, with the
marriage lasting for 21 years but none of the
couple’s seven children reportedly lived beyond
their infancy. A second marriage consummated in
1965, was blessed with four children, but only two
survived, although his second wife died in 2001.
A native of Ondo State, Sadela attended St Paul’s
Anglican Primary School, Ifon, Osun State but had
to drop out when he travelled to Sapele, Delta
State to work as houseboy to one Captain Pullen, a
district officer. In 1918, however, Pastor Sadela
returned to primary school and obtained his
Standard Six Certificate of Education in 1920.
Clerics from across Nigeria have paid tribute to the
elderly clergyman. Among them were Reverend
Elisha Ogundiya, the chairman of the Osun State
Christian Association of Nigeria and Reverend Dipo
Filani, the founder of Christ Overcomer’s

British born Nigerian baby learn to feed herself at just three days old.
Three week old, Amara Chiedozie has shocked medical professionals by already
being capable of holding her bottle on her own.
Her mother, 20 year old Onyi Chiedozie claims she has been doing it since she was
three days old.
The strength of her grip at such a tender age has amazed her family and
medics. Onyi Chiedozie, said: ‘When we were feeding, she started shaking, then she
just grabbed the bottle. She was holding it by herself.
‘We couldn’t believe it because babies don’t normally do it that young. I’m so
shocked that I have been documenting it every day. It’s unbelievable. When she
doesn’t want it she will push it away. She isn’t strong enough to throw it away, but
she does push it, like she does with her dummy. If she is really hungry, she starts
shaking. Then she will just grab the bottle as you give it to her.’
Onyi said her progress had astounded medical professionals. The student added:
‘Even nurses are really surprised. When my health support nurse came, she was
shocked as well. She couldn’t believe that this could happen. Whenever we go to
appointments, we take pictures of her doing it.’
Onyi also breastfeeds Amara.
Parents’ charity NCT warns on its website against letting them feed themselves. It
advises: ‘If you give your baby a bottle, always hold the bottle and your baby whilst
feeding. It’s not safe to leave babies to feed themselves or to prop up a bottle; if
they choke they won’t be able to push the bottle away.’
The charity also warns that babies can choke on something as small as a grape and
should not be left alone while feeding or eating.

Jackie chan's son tested positive for drug and it was found in his home.
The 32-year-old son of actor and kung fu star Jackie
Chan has been arrested in Beijing on drugs charges, as authorities clamp
down on celebrity offenders.
Police say they detained Jaycee Chan, who is originally from Hong Kong and
also an actor, as well as Kai Ko, a 23-year-old Taiwanese actor, during a
raid on Thursday in Dongcheng district, the city's commercial and cultural
center, state media, citing Beijing police, said Tuesday.
Both men tested positive for marijuana.
Police later found more than 100 grams of the drug after searching Chan's
apartment. He was also accused of "hosting others to take drugs," the state-
run China Daily said. He could face three years in jail under Chinese law.
State broadcaster CCTV aired footage of Chan , his face blurred, showing
police where the drugs were hidden at his home, while Ko was shown
making a tearful apology.
"I very much regret about what happened. I'm very sorry to those who
support me, like me or even know me personally," he said. "I just want to
tell them I'm really sorry. I've set the worst example, which had the most
terrible influence. And this is a huge mistake."
Celebrity targets
The two actors are being seen as the targets of the capital's latest anti-drugs
campaign, which has seen more than 7,000 people detained for using drugs,
a 72% year-on-year increase, according to the China Daily.
Celebrities are increasingly in the spotlight, with a number of high-profile
arrests over drug-related incidents in recent months, including popular
movie actor Zhang Mo and singer Li Daimo, who was actually sentenced to
nine months in jail for hosting a crystal meth party at his home, according to
the China Daily.
Earlier this month, dozens of management agencies representing performers
in the entertainment industry signed an agreement with Beijing authorities
banning drug use from the industry and pledging to sack artists who break
the law.
The elder Chan, who has starred in a number of Hollywood movies including
"Rush Hour" and "The Karate Kid," has actually campaigned against drug
use, and was named an anti-drugs ambassador in China in 2009.

Attempt to bomb lagos airpot foiled
An attempt to bomb the Centrex Unit of the Nigerian Airspace
Management Agency, NAMA, at the Murtala Mohammed
International Airport, Lagos by a suspected Boko Haram member
was yesterday foiled by security operatives.
A source close to the airport said that the unidentified suspect
was arrested around midday by the security operatives when he
attempted to detonate the explosive device strapped to his body.
According to reports, the suspect appeared to be a handicapped
beggar soliciting alms within the vicinity but his suspicious
behaviour aroused the curiosity of the officers who prevented the
suspect from detonating the explosive device at the complex.
On a closer look, the suspect was found to be actually
handicapped, but had a suspected suicide bomb vest strapped
around his waist.
Another source close to the agency insisted that the vigilance of
the agency’s security officers prevented a disaster as the
suspected bomber was immediately arrested before he could
detonate the device.
The source said: “Our security men were curious of his presence
at the place and they queried him, but the explanation he gave
was unconvincing. So, they kept an eagle eye on him.
“A few seconds later, they noticed that he was struggling to
press an object which was wrapped around him. They had to
swoop on him and they discovered a deadly explosive on him.
“The airport police command was promptly alerted and he was
immediately handed over to the police. I can confirm to you that
he was immediately taken to the Beesam Police Station within
the airport.
“Why he chose NAMA and airport is still unknown to some of us
here.” Our correspondent, however, confirmed that the suspect
was undergoing interrogation at the police station. The
Commissioner of Police, Airport Command, Mr. Waheed Salahu,
declined to comment, saying that it would be too premature to
talk with journalists.
But a source close to the command confirmed the story to our
correspondent. The source, however, could not confirm if the
suspect was a member of the deadly Islamic sect, Boko Haram,
but confirmed that the explosive devices were on the suspect as
at the time of arrest.
Also, NAMA General Manager, Public Affairs, Mr. Supo Atobatele,
in a statement yesterday said the suspect was on ground making
phone calls along the Airport Road, close to CENTREX, an annex
office of NAMA when he was apprehended by security personnel.
“The basic truth, however, is that the said suspect was on the
ground making phone calls along the airport road close to
CENTREX, an annex office of NAMA when the agency’s security
personnel accosted him of his presence.
“His incoherent explanation exposed him to the security
personnel who later found on him some devices suspected to be
explosives. “He was subsequently handed over to the Airport
Police Command for further investigation.”
NAMA Managing Director, Mr. Ibrahim Abdulsalam, in his
reaction commended the security personnel for their vigilance
and prompt arrest of the suspect.

Nigeria's superfalconet shines on sunday.
There were seven minutes remaining of Nigeria’s
FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Canada 2014
quarter-final with New Zealand on Sunday when
Super Falconets’ coach Peter Dedevbo decided to
freshen up his front line.
Though 2-0 up and well in control, the Africans
had failed to trouble the Kiwi keeper for some
time, prompting Dedevbo to look for someone to
shake things up and cap his side’s impending win
with a flourish. The player he turned to was the
appropriately named Uchechi Sunday, and she did
not disappoint.
As she explained in an interview with FIFA.com
after the final whistle, the substitute made an
instant impact. “I scored with my very first touch,”
said the bubbly striker. “That’s football, though,
isn’t it? Sometimes you play well and things don’t
work out. But today I went out there and found
the back of the net straightaway.”
Sunday did not finish there either. With the game
moving into stoppage time, she struck again to
complete a 4-1 win for Nigeria, who will now
meet Korea DPR in the semi-finals.
Sunday’s brace showcased her innate finishing
skills. Firing into the roof of the net from a corner
to open her account, she then used her pace to
score her second, bursting into the box with the
ball at her feet, powering past a Kiwi defender and
clipping the ball neatly over the keeper.
Laughing as he tried to describe her style of play,
she said: “I suppose you could say I’m a goal
specialist. I just try to get in the area so I can
round moves off by putting the ball in the back of
the net. That’s what I’m there for.”
Making an impact
This is not the first time Sunday has jumped off
the bench to steal the show, as Sierra Leone’s
U-20 side can confirm. Taking up the story, the
smiling Sunday said: “We played them during the
qualifiers for the World Cup and I came on in the
second half in that game too. By the end of it I’d
scored five goals.”
She finished the Canada 2014 qualifying
competition as her side’s leading scorer with ten
goals, nearly a third of the 31 they amassed in
total, a figure made all the more impressive by
the fact they did not concede once.
The striker has yet to start a game at the finals,
however, and has found it hard so far to keep her
nerves under control: “It’s impossible not to be
nervous when you’re on the bench! It’s far worse
than starting because you want to get out there
and help your team-mates. And when they make
a mistake you think: ‘Ahhhh. I would have done it
this way or that way’. Sometimes, though, you
just have to sit there and watch and cheer them
on.
After her rapid double against New Zealand, is
there a chance that Dedevbo might be tempted to
give her a start against the North Koreans?
Pondering that question, she replied: “I’m
dreaming about that semi-final. I don’t know if I’ll
start the game – that’s up to the coach – but I
do know that no matter who plays, they will have
to give their all because we want to be in the
final.”
With that final falling on another Sunday, it is
understandable why Nigeria’s super Sunday wants
to be a part of it.

Liberia president apologises for high toll for Ebola health workers
Liberia’s President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf
apologised on Saturday for the high death toll
among the country’s healthcare workers who have
fought an Ebola outbreak, which has killed nearly
1,000 people in three countries.
Johnson Sirleaf pledged up to $18 million for the
Ebola fight, part of which will be given to health
workers to help with insurance and death benefits,
to fund more ambulances and to increase the
number of treatment centres.
“If we haven’t done enough so far, I have come to
apologise to you,” she told hundreds of health
workers who gathered at Monrovia’s City Hall for a
meeting with her government.
The West African Ebola outbreak, centred on
Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia, is the worst in
history. The World Health Organization (WHO) said
on Friday it is an international health emergency
that will likely continue spreading for months.
The disease has put a severe strain on the health
systems of affected states and governments have
responded with a range of measures, including the
declaration of national emergencies in Sierra
Leone, Liberia and Nigeria, which confirmed seven
cases of Ebola in Lagos.
Ebola has reaped a high toll on health workers
who have acted as first responders. Liberia alone
has lost at least three doctors to the virus and 32
health workers.
Sierra Leone’s Health Ministry said a senior
physician had contracted the disease at the
Connaught referral hospital in the capital,
Freetown.
Dr. Modupeh Cole contracted the disease “after
treating a patient … who was later proved to have
the virus and died,” said ministry spokesman Sidi
Yahya Tunis.
Cole was taken to an Ebola treatment centre in
eastern Kailahun district, run by medical charity
Medecins Sans Frontieres, Tunis said.
He is the latest Sierra Leonean medical practitioner
to contract the virus. The country’s leading Ebola
doctor, Shek Umar Khan, died of the disease last
month and several nurses have died.

EBOLA: Hope rises as trial drug arrives
A Nigerian scientist has raised the
hope of survival for remaining
patients of the deadly Ebola virus
disease in the country with the
donation of an experimental drug
for treating the disease.
This is even as another Nigerian
nurse who treated the late Liberian
that imported the virus into the
country, Patrick Sawyer, was
confirmed dead yesterday. The
deceased are the Liberian, two
nurse and another Nigerian who
worked at the ECOWAS
Commission in Lagos.
The Nigerian ECOWAS protocol
official contracted the disease from
Sawyer while helping him to the
hospital after he took ill upon
arrival at the Murtala Mohammed
International Airport, Lagos. He
died last Tuesday.
At a briefing in Abuja, the Minister
of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu,
informed journalists about the
arrival of the drug and confirmed
that another patient had tested
positive to the disease.
He did not name the donor of the
drug. At present, the minister said
the number of persons that had
tested positive to the disease in
the country was 11, including the
late Liberian.
But a statement by his Special
Assistant on Media and
Communications, Dan Nwomeh, a
copy of which was made available
to National Mirror, denied the
additional case.
The statement also confirmed the
death of the nurse, which was not
disclosed by the minister in his
earlier briefing. Part of the
statement reads: “Nigeria has now
recorded 10 confirmed cases of
Ebola Virus Disease, EVD. Out of
these, four have died and eight are
currently under treatment. (It is
important to note that the number
of confirmed cases remains 10 as
at today and not 11 as earlier
announced this morning.
We regret the error, which arose
from double counting in the
process of communicating the
additional death from the
operational centre in Lagos to the
Federal Ministry of Health).
“The fourth death recorded today
was a Nigerian nurse who
participated in the initial
management of the index case.”
The minister, who did not give the
name of the Nigerian who procured
the drug or the volume that would
be used, however, pledged that the
drug would be used according to
the World Health Organisation’s,
WHO, guidelines.
WHO had last Tuesday approved
the use of experimental drugs to
manage the virus which currently
has no approved vaccine or other
medication for its cure, prevention
or treatment.
The drug from the scientist, Nano-
Silva, the minister said, “is
something that has been used
experimentally on a lot of things.
“The only experimental drug we
have now is Nano- Silver,
provided by a Nigerian scientist;
details of the drug will be
disclosed later to the media,”
Chukwu said.
Experimental drugs are used on
animals and other living
organisms to prove their
effectiveness before getting
approval from the WHO for use on
humans. He added: “More
information will come
subsequently from the technical
people.
As minister, I have just told you
what we’ve done because the drug
is going to Lagos this morning
(yesterday). Let it get there. But, I
can tell you, subsequent ones, the
technical people shall be briefing
you on how they are using it.
“Those things we’ve not decided
because they are going through
committee. They have to go
through it, what dosage to give, in
what format, and so on and so
forth.” Canada had pledged to
donate close to 1,000 doses of an
experimental vaccine to help in the
fight against the virus.
The drug has also only been used
on animals. Another drug, Zmapp,
had been requested by African
countries, including Nigeria, for the
treatment of the virus. However,
experts believe Zmapp, which
seems to be most prominent of all
available drugs, could take about
one month to be available to meet
the present demand of the region.
The number of persons under
surveillance over the virus has
reduced from 177 announced by
government on Tuesday to 169.
During yesterday’s briefing,
Chukwu had said that the new
victim of the disease in the
country was a doctor who refused
to be kept under surveillance. He
said the total number of confirmed
cases as at the time of the briefing
was 11.
“Out of these 11, three are dead.
The three that are dead include the
index case, a Liberia-American, a
Nigerian nurse who was one of
those who managed the index
case, and a Nigerian who was
serving as protocol officer with the
ECOWAS Commission; and who
was detailed to go and welcome
delegates that were to go to
Calabar to attend the meeting of
the ECOWAS Commission.
“So, 11 confirmed cases out of
which three have died. Eight are
still alive; more than half of them
are doing very well and are
actually showing signs of
recovery.”
He said 169 persons were under
surveillance in Lagos, adding that
the number was going down
because all the 169 were
secondary contacts. Eight patients,
the minister added, were in
isolation; and that four of them
were responding ‘very well’ to
treatment. The minister maintained
that the 21-day maximum
incubation period to observe
primary contacts had elapsed.
“We have allowed those primary
contacts who have not shown any
sign of disease to be released. So,
all the 169 contacts currently in
Lagos are all secondary contacts.
“In addition, we have six contacts
in Enugu. As at yesterday, we were
following on 21 of them.
But after a very stringent and
rigorous interview, we found out
that 15 did not qualify as contacts
because people who probably
stayed away from the subject
claimed they were contacts.
There is no more primary contact
under surveillance. “The primary
contacts who are sick and are
being treated are eight; the primary
contact who were sick but died
were two, and, of course, the index
case is late,” he said.
On the contacts in Enugu who
were reported to be 21 yesterday,
Chukwu stated that one of the
primary contacts disobeyed the
Incident Management Committee’s
instructions and left Lagos at the
time she had no symptoms.
“The newly-married doctor, who
was among the medical officials
that treated the Liberian that
imported the disease into the
country, Patrick Sawyer, went to
visit her husband in Enugu State,”
the minister said.
Only two of them, he said, live
together; and when she developed
symptoms, she got alert and went
to a health facility from where it
was reported to the Incident
Management Committee. And
since then, she has been under
treatment in Lagos. She is among
the 11 that are confirmed positive.
He added: “The husband, even
though he doesn’t have any
symptom as at now, he is not
Ebola positive as at now, he is
under quarantine because of the
intimate contact in Lagos. She was
going to Enugu; she did not infect
anybody because she was in-
symptomatic. You can only infect
people when you have symptoms.
“So, the fact that she went by
public transport posed no threat to
anyone.
She had spent days before she left
Enugu. She didn’t infect anybody
on her way. “When you don’t have
symptom, you don’t infect
anybody. But on her return
journey to Lagos, both of them
travelled in special ambulances.
So, they did not have opportunity
to contaminate anybody from
Lagos to Enugu. “Presently, only
six persons are under surveillance
in Enugu, down from initial 21,”

Suarez begins training at Barca
Luis Suarez will start training with his new
Barcelona teammates on Friday after getting the
green light from the Court of Arbitration for Sport,
the Spanish giants confirmed.
A statement released by the Catalan club read:
"Following the announcement of the verdict by the
Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) regarding the
appeal against the sanction imposed on Luis
Suarez by Fifa, FC Barcelona hereby announces
that the player will join the first team's training
session scheduled for Friday at 9.30 AM CET (0730
GMT) in the Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper.
"Likewise, the public presentation of Suarez as a
new FC Barcelona player will be held on Monday at
the Camp Nou, on occasion of the Joan Gamper
Trophy match."
The CAS upheld Suarez's four-month ban from
playing in competitive games as well as his nine-
match international suspension, but it did allow
him to train and play in unofficial matches.
And that means he could make his debut against
Mexican club Leon in the Gamper Trophy, the
traditional curtain-raiser to the season at the Camp
Nou.
There will be a temptation to give the 27-year-old
a run-out against Leon as it will be Barcelona's
final friendly before their first league game of the
new season against Elche next weekend.
Suarez has reportedly been training on his own in
an unknown location in Catalonia since completing
his 95 million euros (£75 million, $127 million)
move to the Camp Nou from Liverpool last month.
He will be available to play in competitive matches
from Saturday, October 25, meaning his official
debut could come in the first Clasico of the
campaign against Real Madrid at the Santiago
Bernabeu, which has been scheduled for that
weekend.
Suarez was banned for biting Italy's Giorgio
Chiellini at the World Cup but despite the player
being allowed to resume training, Uruguayan
football officials are still "frustrated" with the
handling of the controversy.
Uruguayan Football Federation lawyer Daniel Cravo
told Sky Sports News: "We are really frustrated –
we understand that the behaviour of Luis Suarez in
that match deserved to be punished but we don't
think that it was the worst behaviour of a player in
a World Cup.
"There have been worse situations and the players
were not sanctioned at this level but of course we
respect CAS' decision.
"We have to wait for the reasons and we are sorry
for not having achieved what our client wanted
from us. I don't want to criticise the decision
because I don't know the grounds, that's
something we are interested in checking."
Suarez has never explained his propensity to bite
opponents.
He earned a 10-game ban for biting Chelsea's
Branislav Ivanovic in 2013, after being sidelined for
seven matches with Dutch club Ajax in 2010 for
the same offence against PSV Eindhoven's Otman
Bakkal.
On Wednesday, English Premier League boss
Richard Scudamore said that while Suarez was a
great footballer, he was also "an accident waiting
to happen".

Australians get ‘promising lead’ in search for missing Malaysian plane
Australian Defense Vessel Ocean Shield has
found what may be new evidence pointing to
the location of the Malaysia Airlines Flight
370′s black box. But it could take a few days
for officials to confirm whether this “promising
lead” is linked to the missing aircraft.
An Australian navy ship detected signals that
are consistent with the pings that come from
aircraft black boxes underwater on Saturday and
Sunday.
Many hope that this could be the missing black
box from Malaysian Airlines Flight 370, which
vanished on March 7 . Officials leading the
search for the missing aircraft have cautiously
called this a “most promising lead.”
The signals were picked up by the ship Ocean
Shield in the Indian Ocean, west of the
Australian Coast. Crewmembers are using
advanced U.S. Navy sound detectors, which can
detect pings up to 4,500 meters — more than
14,750 feet — below the surface of the ocean.
But in order to track signals, U.S. Navy Capt.
Mark Matthews told reporters in Perth, Australia,
that the sound detectors must be directly above
the object.
“It’s like playing hot and cold when you’re
searching for something and someone’s telling
you you’re getting warmer and warmer and
warmer,” Matthews said. “When you’re right on
top of it you get a good return.”
These signals differ from those detected by
Chinese ships on Saturday . The Ocean Shield’s
lead is about 300 nautical miles away from the
location of pulse signals picked up by China’s
Haixun 01 ship.
Australian officials say it could take from a few
hours to a few days to confirm whether or not
the pings are related to Flight 370.
